Choose your route
- A7 motorway
- About 250 km, around 3 hours, toll road
- N8 main road
- A little slower, no toll, through towns
- Tizi n'Test pass
- A full day, narrow mountain road, for confident drivers
For most people the A7 is the right choice. It is fast, well kept and climbs through the High Atlas with long views and a series of tunnels.
Driving the A7 motorway
Join the motorway north of Agadir and follow signs for Marrakech. The limit is 120 km/h, and there are service areas along the way with fuel, coffee and toilets. The toll is paid at the booth when you leave, so keep some cash ready.
Fill up before the climb
Service areas are far apart in the mountain section. Start with at least half a tank.
Strong crosswinds can blow on the high sections, and the temperature can fall sharply in winter. Slow down in the tunnels and take your sunglasses off before you enter them.
The road over Tizi n'Test
If you have time, the old road through Taroudant and over the Tizi n'Test pass is one of the great drives in Morocco. It is also narrow and winding, with sharp drops and no barriers in places, so allow a full day and avoid driving it at night.
Snow can close the pass in winter. Check conditions before you leave. A car with higher ground clearance, like the Dacia Duster, makes this route more comfortable.
Good places to stop
- Taroudant, for its old walls and a quiet market.
- Imi n'Tanoute, a practical stop on the main road.
- Chichaoua, known for its carpets, on the last stretch to Marrakech.
